University of Hull
universityThe University of Hull runs a three-year BA (Hons) Music Production degree from its main Cottingham Road campus, plus an MMus with a production and technology specialism at postgraduate level. The university was founded in 1927 as University College Hull, gaining its Royal Charter in 1954. Students record in the flagship Duality Recording Studio and an ambisonic 3D sound studio, work with Pro Tools and Ableton Live, and can also use the 400-seat Middleton Hall concert venue. The course is accredited by JAMES, the joint scheme run by the Association of Professional Recording Services and the Music Producers Guild, and includes partnerships with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Opera North. Entry is by A level, BTEC or an equivalent Level 3 qualification, with the university stating it looks at the whole application rather than grades alone. Teaching staff include Dr Rowan Oliver, a former drummer for Goldfrapp who still works as an international session musician, and Dr Niall Thomas, a record production researcher who produces, mixes and plays bass for the band Dead Witches.
Hull College
further educationHull College runs a two-year, Level 3 Music Performance and Production course at its Wilberforce Drive campus in the city centre, for students who want to perform, write and record their own material. Teaching splits roughly 80% practical to 20% theory, with rehearsals, ensemble work, live performance and studio recording sessions built around industry-standard equipment and software. Entry requires four GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above, including maths and English. Units cover principles of music performance and production, critical listening and composition, music industry and professional practice, and a collaborative performance and production project. The college does not publish course fees online; applicants need to contact admissions directly. Graduates are pointed toward university music degrees, specialist music schools, or entry-level performance and production roles in the industry.
East Riding College
further educationEast Riding College's specialist music department sits at its Baker Street campus in Hull, in the former Rhythm Rooms building close to the city centre, and runs music courses from Level 2 through to a validated BA (Hons) Music Production degree. The Level 2 and Level 3 programmes cover studio and live production, studio and live engineering, and specialist technology study alongside performance and composition units. The department has its own in-house record label, ERC Academy Records, used to release material students write, perform and produce, plus rehearsal space and a professional recording studio. Level 2 entry needs three GCSEs at grade 3 or above, ideally including English or maths; Level 3 needs four GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English and maths. The Level 2/3 provision lists a combined tuition and exam fee of £999 each. The higher education pathway lets students complete an HNC in the first year and progress to an HND, or continue onto the BA (Hons) Music Production or BA (Hons) Popular Music Performance degrees, both taught at the Hull site.
