Edinburgh College
further educationEdinburgh College formed in 2012 from the merger of Jewel and Esk College, Stevenson College and Edinburgh's Telford College. Sound and music production is taught at the Milton Road campus, which has four SSL studios, four PreSonus studios and dedicated spatial-audio post-production rooms, alongside a 200-capacity auditorium. The route runs from a UAL Level 2/3 Diploma through a two-year Sound Production HND (SCQF Level 8) to a one-year BA (Hons) Audio Production top-up (SCQF Level 10), the last two validated by Kingston University London. HND tuition is £1,285/yr, paid directly by SAAS for eligible Scottish residents; the BA top-up runs at £1,820/yr under the same route. Pro Tools, Logic and Ableton Live are all taught across the levels. A separate Kingston-validated BA (Hons) Music and BA (Hons) Music Business run from the Sighthill campus. HND entry needs two Highers or equivalent plus an interview and sound-production work samples; the BA top-up needs an HND at Merit grade or accredited prior learning.
Edinburgh Napier University
universityEdinburgh Napier traces back to 1964 as Napier Technical College, became a university in 1992, and took its current name in 2009. Music and sound courses run from the Merchiston campus, built around Merchiston Tower, birthplace of the university's namesake John Napier in 1550. BA (Hons) Music lets students follow a production-focused pathway alongside performance or composition, with modules including Recording Studio Theory and Practice and Music Technology and Live Performance, taught across four recording studios and a networked music lab running Logic, Pro Tools, Ableton and Sibelius. A separate BSc (Hons) Sound Design covers audio for film, games, VR and other interactive media rather than music production specifically, using a dedicated Digital Media Lab. Both are four-year degrees. Scottish students pay £1,820/yr, paid by SAAS for eligible residents; rest-of-UK students pay £9,790/yr and overseas/EU students £21,120/yr for 2026/27 entry. University of Edinburgh (Reid School of Music)
universityThe University of Edinburgh's Reid School of Music, part of Edinburgh College of Art, holds Britain's oldest university Chair of Music outside Oxford and Cambridge, endowed in 1839 by a bequest from General John Reid. Its BSc (Hons) Acoustics and Music Technology is taught from the Lauriston campus, combining physics and mathematics with music technology across sound recording, audio signal processing, architectural acoustics and creative music technology. The four-year degree adds audio programming, audio machine learning and sound design in years 2 and 3, ending in a year-long individual project, and uses six production studios in stereo and 5.1 configurations. Kalandraka Music (KM Music School of Edinburgh)
private schoolKalandraka Music, trading as KM Music School of Edinburgh, runs from the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Centre at 25 Palmerston Place in the West End, with a second studio in Kirkliston. Founder Darío Fernández Peteiro moved to Scotland in 2012 and has taught music in Edinburgh ever since, alongside his own production, mixing and mastering work.
