Cardiff and Vale College
further educationCardiff and Vale College (CAVC) is the largest further education college in Wales, formed in 2011 from the merger of Barry College and Coleg Glan Hafren. Its Music (Production) Level 3 Diploma and Extended Diploma run at the City Centre Campus on Dumballs Road, a two-year full-time course using two specialist production suites with Apple Mac workstations running Pro Tools, Logic Pro X and Ableton Live. Students can progress into CAVC's own higher education provision: a DipHE in Performance & Recording and a BA (Hons) Electronic Music Production top-up degree for those with 240 HE credits at Levels 4 and 5. Entry to the Level 3 course needs 5 GCSEs A*-C including English and Maths, or an equivalent Level 2 Diploma at Merit, plus an interview; there are no exams, with assessment through practical and written projects. The college states past learners on this pathway have gone into work with the BBC, music event companies and podcast production companies. Course fees are set individually by age and funding status; the Level 3 course carries a £65 annual studio fee on top of any tuition costs.
University of South Wales
universityThe University of South Wales teaches its music and sound courses at the ATRiuM building in Cardiff city centre, a five-minute walk from Cardiff Central station. The flagship BA (Hons) Music Producing costs £9,790/yr for home students and covers studio production, composition and sound design across a Dolby Atmos suite, with Grammy-nominated producer Romesh Dodangoda (Bring Me the Horizon, Bullet for My Valentine) acting as course ambassador and mentor. Postgraduates can take the one-year MSc Music Engineering and Production (£11,060/yr for home students), which is JAMES-accredited (Joint Audio Media Education Support) and includes a placement scheme with the BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales. A related BSc (Hons) Sound, Lighting and Live Event Technology covers sound system engineering for theatre, broadcast and live events over three years, or four with a sandwich placement. The university cites a significant number of the technical crew at Glastonbury Festival 2024 as alumni or students of its live events course, and has an industry partnership with Cardiff-based production company Stage Sound Services.
Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama
universityThe Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama (RWCMD) is Wales's National Conservatoire, founded in 1949 as Cardiff College of Music within Cardiff Castle and awarded its royal title in 2002 during the Queen's Golden Jubilee, the fifth UK conservatoire to receive one. Its production-facing course is the MA Sound Design & Production, a two-year full-time postgraduate degree taught at RWCMD, Llanishen Studios and the Old Library, validated by the University of South Wales, covering recording, mixing and special effects across theatre, TV, film and live events. Undergraduates can specialise through the BMus (Hons) Music course's Composition and Creative Music Technology pathway, built around one-to-one tuition in electronic composition and creative music technology alongside traditional notated composition. Entry to composition pathways is by portfolio and interview rather than performance audition. Students on both pathways get access to Tŷ Cerdd (Music House Wales) and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, whose recording studios the college describes as among the largest dedicated recording facilities outside Abbey Road in London.
