BIMM Brighton
private schoolBIMM's founding campus, teaching since 2001 as the Brighton Institute of Modern Music, though it's technically in Hove: BIMM House is a converted, Grade II listed former Hove Town Hall on Brunswick Street West, paired with a second site, BIMM West, a few doors down. No short courses here: it's degree-only, BA/BMus (Hons) at £9,790/yr for UK students, or a one-year CertHE at the same rate. BIMM University Limited holds TEF Bronze from the Office for Students (2023), a tier below Point Blank's Gold. BIMM's own site credits James Bay with getting his start in Brighton, and 2026 BRIT nominee Clementine Douglas is a graduate.
WaterBear College of Music
private schoolFounded in 2018 by Bruce John Dickinson (Little Angels, and an early co-founder of the BIMM group) and former college principal Adam Bushell, WaterBear runs from Hanover House on Queens Road plus its own gig venues, WaterBear Venue and WaterBear MusicBar, used for both shows and short courses. Degrees were validated by the University of Chichester at launch, switching to Falmouth University in 2020, at £9,790/yr. WaterBear does not hold an Office for Students TEF rating, unlike Point Blank (Gold) or BIMM (Bronze). Also has a Sheffield campus, opened 2023 inside the former Gatecrasher nightclub building, sharing the same course catalogue. Its cheapest current option is a short, guest-led weekend camp (Prog Rock Camp with Marillion's Steve Rothery ran at £750 for four days in August 2026) rather than any structured beginner short course.

private schoolA one-instructor operation run by DJ Tom Yum from a purpose-built studio in Kemptown since 2016, a 20-year vinyl turntablist with Hip Hop/Funk/Soul credits alongside acts including MF DOOM, Slum Village and KRS-One, and founder of Yogocop Records. There's no roster of tutors or accreditation body here, just one-to-one and small-group teaching: mixing, scratching and beat juggling, sold as single 2-hour lessons (£60) or 6-lesson beginner courses (£300, working out cheaper per hour). The legal entity behind Dv8 dates to 2003, but its original Brighton provision was rated Inadequate by Ofsted in 2018 and formally closed; Dv8 then merged with the London Learning Consortium, relaunched under new leadership, and (per its own site) was regraded 'Good' across the board in a 2023 Ofsted inspection, following a 2020 inspection that was Good for High Needs provision but Requires Improvement overall. Has hosted guest industry professionals including DJ Skitz and MC Harry Shotta.
